LNG Kish Island

The production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from natural gas feedstock involves purification, impurity removal, dehydration, the removal of heavy hydrocarbons, and deep cooling of the gas to the temperature required for liquefaction, followed by product storage and loading for shipment to customers.

Process Description of the Kish LNG Plant:

Upon entering the unit, the natural gas feedstock is first cleansed of solid particles, acidic compounds, and other impurities via filtration and purification equipment. In subsequent stages, heavy hydrocarbons, water, and mercury are removed from the gas stream to prevent the formation of ice and hydrates, as well as to avoid damage to cryogenic equipment.

The purified gas then enters the liquefaction (cooling) section. Here, a mixed refrigerant (MR)—compressed by dedicated compressors and cooled in air coolers—circulates in a closed loop, providing the cooling required for the LNG process. Inside the “Cold Box” and cryogenic heat exchanger, the natural gas is gradually cooled to a very low temperature and ultimately converted into LNG. Once it leaves the liquefaction section, the produced LNG is transferred to a storage tank and subsequently routed through the LNG loading skid and loading arms for transfer to transport vessels or end-users.

Concurrently, auxiliary units—such as nitrogen generation (including PSA), demineralized water production, wastewater treatment, the hot oil system, and the flare/torch system—support the operational, safety, and process requirements of the main plant.
